Winter is coming, and if you are anything like us, you are likely busy preparing for the holidays to celebrate with family and friends.
The first piece of advice we give out at Woodstock & Manhattan Institute for Holistic Dentistry to anyone seeking healthier gums and teeth is to brush two times per day, floss once daily and get professional teeth-cleaning habitually. The second piece of advice we give is to cautiously monitor the food choices you make. Foods high in sugar and foods difficult to chew especially can be damaging to your oral health. Here are some foods you should look out for:
Soft breads. Soft breads are especially malleable, and when they get wedged between your pearly whites, the resultant food remnants can contribute to the development of tooth erosion and gum disease. What’s extra, soft breads are particularly high in sugar, which turns to tooth-erosive bacteria when left in your oral cavity for too long.
Sports drinks. Electrolytes! Athletic performance! Colored sweat! While these things may make awesome (and even motivational) commercials, sports drinks are actually not great for your oral health. Like sodas, sports drinks contain large amounts of sugars, which contribute to the accrual of plaque on your pearly whites. Leave sports drinks for athletic performances and opt for water in other situations.
Sticky foods. Sticky foods like dried fruits and candies stick to your chompers and are tricky to get rid of even with teeth-brushing. As most tooth decay and periodontal disease is a result of bacteria feeding on debris wedged in your oral cavity, foods stuck to your pearly whites can be a major problem. Next time you want to have a sticky treat, make sure to carefully flush your oral cavity out afterward.
These tips are just a few bit of advice. Dr. Victor Zeines and the staff at Woodstock & Manhattan Institute for Holistic Dentistry in Shokan, New York, would love to help you learn extra about foods good and bad for your pearly whites.
