How to care for your teeth and gums during cold and flu season

Winter time is a great time for holidays and celebrations, but it’s also a time filled with sniffling and coughing. It’s cold and flu season! If you get sick, it’s best to take good care of your teeth and smile so you can maintain a top-notch oral health. Our dentist, Dr. Victor Zeines, is happy to help you care for your smile by encouraging you to do the following things while you’re sick:

-Brush your teeth well and floss at least once a day, even if you’re too tired to do so. This is important because some cold and flu medicine can promote cavities. Remember: Brush twice a day for two minutes each time.

-Drink a lot of liquid. This can help you stay hydrated and can also wash bacteria away from your teeth and gums.

-Toss your toothbrush once you are fully recovered. If you brush with the same brush when you’re all better, then there is a chance you can get sick again.

-Gargle with salt water or rinse antibacterial mouthwash while you’re sick. This can help you kill the bacteria in your mouth and keep your smile in tip-top shape.
